Operating principles for a national GLAM sector institution
A national GLAM sector institution commissioned a set of operating principles to guide decision-making and policy development in the context of a new structure and approach to carrying out its functions. Antistatic designed and delivered an engagement approach, facilitating workshops with over 20 leaders from across the organisation. We carried out thematic analysis from the workshop discussions and drafted and refined the principles, working closely with key stakeholders. The operating principles will be adopted alongside a plan for rolling them out across the organisation.
Telling the story of the Maintainers
The Maintainers, a global research and practice network advancing maintenance and repair of material objects, infrastructures, and information systems, needed support to tell the story of their work and communicate about a structural transition. Antistatic worked with the organization’s co-leaders to develop an approach for overhauling the Maintainers website to focus on the new fellowship cohorts community programs while retaining and highlighting the broad repository of resources and documentation. Our strategic storytelling work continued with the development, editing, and design of a public-facing Maintainers Study Guide that shared the Maintainers’ decade of scholarship with new audiences and maintainers around the world.
Research-informed strategy for a new philanthropic initiative
An emerging Bay Area philanthropist commissioned systems change agency Circadian Lab to produce a report on the opportunities and risks of expanded legal access to psychedelic medicines. Circadian brought in Antistatic to manage the interview-based research process, help write up the findings, and develop a set of guidance for funders and practitioners. This research was published as the Psychedelic Listening Project, and it formed the groundwork for a new philanthropic initiative to support impactful, equitable, and community-led projects in the space. Antistatic worked with Circadian to co-develop a mission, vision and values, manage the brand development and design process, and draft a grantmaking strategy that aligned with the client’s needs and best practice in the field.
Inquiry into the Response to the North Island Severe Weather Events
A New Zealand Government Inquiry was established to review the response to Cyclone Gabrielle and two other 2023 North Island severe weather events. These events caused significant damage, loss of life and ongoing impacts for communities. Antistatic joined the Inquiry as report writers, working alongside the Inquiry Panel members and secretariat to outline, draft and refine the report of the Inquiry. We brought together content and insights from many sources in the report content and helped ensure the report reflected the voice, learnings and viewpoints of the Panel. The report of the Inquiry was presented to the Minister of Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery in 2024.
Supporting internet resilience in Aotearoa
The IICR research project (2025-2026) aimed to understand what is needed to support internet infrastructure resilience in Aotearoa New Zealand in the context of climate change. Antistatic co-leads Anna and Kelly were a core part of the research team, working closely with project leads Brainbox and a wider network of contributors. We drafted a backgrounder document and co-developed and facilitated a series of X workshops around diverse topics, prepared collateral and communications for the project and co-wrote the final research outputs. The project resulted in stronger relationships between key stakeholders, a framework for understanding internet resilience and concrete recommendations for action to support internet resilience.
Ensuring digital technology benefits people and planet
Digital and data-driven technology systems are being developed at speed, and the ways they are designed and deployed significantly impact whether they bring benefit or harm to people and the environment. In 2022, Antistatic edited the Bridget Williams Books volume More Zeros and Ones: Digital Technology, Maintenance and Equity in Aotearoa New Zealand. Anna and Kelly commissioned and edited nine chapters on topics exploring what tech could look like if it was designed for everyone, and worked closely with the 18 contributing authors during the process. Their introduction, “Building the world for everyone”, sets out a strong call to action for equitable, well-maintained technology systems that provides a blueprint for anyone working in digital space.
